Tis the season my friends! Fall! Where I live sweater weather is settling in and it’s dark outside when I eat dinner. This is the time when we like to cuddle up with a hot drink and watch the Thanksgiving Charlie Brown special! The time where pumpkins are everywhere! Like, how can there be so many pumpkins? This is also the season where I wait for the Christmas season.
Here are some Ghostly & Autumn Reads to check out when you get tired of watching the leaves fall.
The Graveyard Book
This is a classic! The Graveyard Book is basically the Jungle Book (the book not the movie). It was a really great read for me! A boy escapes from a murderer and ends up in a graveyard when he was a child. The creatures there take pity on him and name him Nobody and decide to raise and protect him. This follows the adventures of Nobody.
Harry Potter Series
Do I have to explain why this is a fall read? Harry Potter is just a not so ordinary lad whose parents are dead and he has been raised by his horrible relatives. He is surprised to receive a letter from Hogwarts, a school for young wizards and witches, telling him he has been excepted in. Oh, did I mention that there is a secret world left unseen by normal humans full of magic, fantastic beasts, and wizards? No? Well there is and Harry has been thrown into it. There are new rules to learn, new talents to master, new friends to go on adventures with, also someone always seems to be trying to kill him and there’s a prophecy. So think Percy Jackson in the fall and instead of demi gods they’re wizards, and instead of a camp there is a castle turned boarding school.
The Skinjacker Trilogy
This trilogy is fascinating but make sure you’re strong in your faith before you delve into it. Allie and Nick don’t survive the car accident…. But they don’t entirely make it to the afterlife. Welcome to Everlost! A place were memory is of extreme value. A place where you sink to the center of the earth if you stay still for too long. A place where a girl known as either the queen of Everlost or the Sky Witch and a boy known as the terrible McGill, roam. Nick and Allie are quite confused about what is happening to them so the head off on a journey to find their home, guided by a kid named Leif. Allie and Nick are both on different paths when they enter Everlost, yet their fates are intertwined and bound to change everyone’s afterlife!
House of Salt and Sorrows
House of Salt and Sorrows may have a coastal setting but if you want to gets some spooking vibes this is the book for you! House of Salt and Sorrows is a dark retelling of the fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Once the duke had twelve daughters, but one by one they are dying off. Some say it’s a curse, others say it is all a coincidence. One of the sisters will do anything to protect what is left of her family and her resolve is hardened after the most recent death of one of her sisters. Now strange things are happening around her sisters. One of her sisters claims she sees the ghosts of her dead sisters, all the other sisters have discovered a portal that leads them to a different ball each night, and our main character has run into a mysterious young man which totally never happens in a YA novel. This book has such a great aesthetic! Just think dark fantasy, seaside, a little steam punk, romance, and spookiness!
Murder on the Orient Express
Murder mysteries are popular this time of year, so if you’re looking for a mystery involving murder to read try out this classic. This is a very engaging for a classic in my opinion. I had the misfortune of having the plot twist spoiled but I was still able to enjoy this read and it still was able to surprise me. Also this fun to read aloud because there are a range of accents to use. Hehe. Definitely would recommend this!
The Bone Houses
This really was a great read and perfect for fall! The world has a Celtic mythology feel to it and the characters are good. Ryn is the daughter of a gravedigger who has taken over the family business after her parents died. Now she digs graves and fights zombies called bone houses. She would do anything for her siblings and when it looks like her home is about to be taken away because of her uncles debt she must except the bargain of a mapmaker who needs a guide through the mountains. Ellis is a map maker without a past. He wants to map out the mysterious mountains and surrounding forest, to do this he must enlist the services of a gravedigger. This unlikely duo must go on a quest all the while being chased by the bone houses! Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway) Ryn and Ellis’s worlds will never be the same.
Conclusion
And there you have it. So far on my Fall TBR I’ve read the Bone Houses. I don’t know if I’ll get to the Six of Crows duology or Letters to the Lost, I know I won’t be able to get Gilded, but they are definitely on my TBR!
